The analysis of drugs in wastewater: a tool for estimating consumption, application in prisons - in French

Developed in the early 2000s, wastewater analysis can be a tool for estimating the consumption of psychoactive substances. This method, which makes it possible to compare levels between different cities, is mobilized by several European works supported by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The purpose of the paper presented here is to describe the method and its application in the context of a university research project initiated in prison in 2015. A first feasibility study was carried out in France in three penal institutions. The first results as well as the difficulties encountered, the limitations and the ethical considerations are evoked to provide all the necessary elements for the understanding and interpretation of this type of analysis.
